3 Ways the Design of Your Home Can Help You Create Your Dream Life
For better or worse, I’ve always felt my surroundings can have an impact on my mood. I wouldn't say there is one type of environment that is a good mood environment and one type that is a bad mood environment, it's not that simple. But I'm sure you can agree that if the colors are just right you feel energized. If you can look out large windows to a well-maintained lawn you feel confident. If you are in a cozy room with beautiful lighting and soft furnishings it may be easier to relax. You get the idea. Well what if you wanted to take this a step further and adjust your surroundings to help you in your life? How can you use your home’s interior design to help you with your goals?
1. Designing for Focus and Productivity
It is possible to design a space that will eliminate distractions and set the stage for work. It is also possible to change the layout of your home so that when the work day is done, you can enjoy time with your family and guests without being reminded of your job.
If you have a home office, you want to be happy in the room you may spend 6, 8 or even 10 hours a day in, but you want those to be productive working hours as well. The positioning of your desk, the art and accessories chosen, and even the colors used, can make you feel comfortable and happy in your office. Something as simple as a picture of your "why," which could be a vacation you are working towards, or a picture of your family, can help you get to work and power through your tasks with ease.
How about daily housework? You want your home to have a smart layout, lighting, and organization to reduce stress and be more efficient. For example, if you have a cramped kitchen with poor flow, dinner chores become a burden and you end each evening feeling overwhelmed and just... done. But if you are considering some updates to cabinets or backsplash tile, why not improve the layout and features in your kitchen while you are at it to make your day to day living more enjoyable?
2. Creating a Home That Supports Your Lifestyle
In the Tampa Bay area life can be go, go, go year-round. But wherever you live, your home design should reflect you, not work against you.
Do you love to entertain? I bet you would plan more get-togethers and offer to have the holiday office party at your place if you had the perfect entertaining space. Does soaking in the tub and reading a book a few evenings a week sound like heaven? Wouldn't you be more likely to do it if your bathroom looked like a luxury spa with dimmable lighting and a tray to set your tea (or cocktail)? When your spaces are designed with your life goals in mind, these activities become easier to do and less likely to be put off, thus changing your life.
3. Elevate Your Activity Level and Well-Being Through Design
Sometimes it's not just a cozy space to relax you are after. Maybe you need to improve your health or relationships. Too big a job for interior design? Not necessarily.
Why do we tend to take the time to play a game as a family when we are at our favorite vacation spot, but at home everyone goes to their separate corners? Perhaps it's the fact that there is a great, well-lit table with enough seats, and a stack of fun activities within arms reach. We can recreate areas like this in your home to invite conversation and connection
If you had a workout room with a stack of towels in your favorite color and a mirror that made you look amazing, wouldn't you enjoy going in there every day? I would also bet that a dedicated cabinet with your protein powder and a blender that could easily be used and tucked back away, without having to take half your kitchen apart, would entice you to make a smoothie in the afternoon. There are so many ways you can design your home around your goals so it becomes more than just a beautiful space.
Whether it's running a business, managing a family schedule, or working towards advances in your career, you want your surroundings to facilitate deep work when necessary, and fun, relaxation, and entertainment when it's time to unwind. All while being thoughtfully designed for the work and play that will occur in each space. This is really the core of what I do as a luxury interior designer. The spaces we live in have the power to shape our habits, mindset, and overall quality of life. If you are ready to create a home that supports your passions and the lifestyle you want to live, let's talk.
